Kids to the Rescue!

Part 4

The next day they met as usual and continued to watch the house. Nothing happened.

"This is boring," Jamal said. "I'd rather watch a snail crawl."

"Me, too," said Ben. "At least a snail does something."

Lily decided she'd better do something fast, before they all lost interest. "That's because they're spying at night," she told the others. "Let's come back here after dinner. If nothing happens tonight, then we'll give it up. Deal?"

The others agreed. Lily suggested they stay the whole night.

"But Mom won't let us do that," Beth said.

"She will if you say you're spending the night with me," Lily said and turned to the boys. "I'll say I'm staying with Beth and you two guys tell your moms you're staying with each other. It'll be a piece of cake!"

"I don't know, Lily. My Dad will be really mad if I lie to him," Jamal said.

"But after we save the world, he'll be so happy he won't even remember that you lied. Come on guys! Let's give it one more night. OK?" Lily begged her friends.

"OK. I guess I'll do it. But I've got a feeling we're going to get in an awful lot of trouble before this is all over," Jamal said.

The kids ate dinner, then met again in the bushes across the street from the haunted house.

"It looks awful dark over there," Ben said.

"I want to go home," Beth said. She stuck one of her braids in her mouth and chewed it.

"Yuck. That's disgusting," Ben said.

"You're the one that's disgusting. I'm going home," Beth said and climbed out of the bushes.

"No, you can't!" Lily stopped her. "Tell you what. You stay here as lookout and Jamal and Ben and I will sneak over to the house and see if we can look in a window. OK?"

"Well, I don't know…"

"She won't do it. She's a little baby. She even has to have a light on when she goes to bed so the monster under her bed won't grab her feet when she gets up!" Ben and Jamal thought that was hilarious and started laughing. Lily hushed them.

"Stop it. The Rulers might hear you. Don't you worry about a thing, Beth. You just stay here in the bushes and watch while we check out the house. Come on, guys."

The three older children started sneaking across the street, hiding behind bushes and trees until they were in the backyard and out of Beth's sight.

Beth suddenly realized that no one told her what to look for and what to do if she saw anything. She settled down to wait for her brother and two friends to come back.

An hour later they were still gone and Beth was beginning to worry.

What if they don't come back? What will I do then? Beth chewed on her braid and worried -- all alone in the dark.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?

Disgusting: Very unpleasant and offensive to others.

Hilarious: Very funny.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT:

The kids lied to their parents in order to stay out all night. Why is that not a good idea? How do you feel when someone lies to you?

DID YOU KNOW?

You've probably seen or heard the word "cliché." A cliché is a phrase or idea that has been used so many times it no longer has much meaning. When Lily says that fooling their parents will be "a piece of cake," she is using a cliché. She could also have said it would be "as easy as falling off a log." Both are cliches and both simply mean it will be "easy." Can you think of other clichés that mean the same thing? How about "easy as pie?' Are there others? How many clichés can you list?
